– There seems to be an argument
about the right genre to give Nigerian music.
– Musicians and other industry
rockers have both spoken for and against it
– Popular musician Jaywon has added his voice to the dilemma
Jaywon at The 5th Amendment by Igos
which held on Sunday, June 19 at the Muson Centre.

There has been a lot of confusion about
appropriately tagging genres when it comes
to Nigerian music. Some are of the opinion
that adding ‘Afro’ to whatever genre
a Nigerian musician choosing to
adapt is enough while others feel there is no need to
add Afro to it. Since music is generally
accepted, there shouldn’t be any need for
distinction.

This was the point Cynthia Morgan was
probably trying to prove when she attempted
to call out Mark Zuckerberg on Instagram for
attaching the wrong tag to Nigerian music.
That said, another musician has attempted
to sort out the confusion about genres.
Speaking exclusively to Naij.com, Jaywon
said: “As for me, I can do all genres.

Today I’m doing fuji, tomorrow I’m doing apala. You
can take these genres out of me.
These days most of us do everything. After all,
na song wey blow people go enjoy na.”

Sad but true.
